What can a dog help us learn about life? About love and loss, joy, healing and celebration?
The idea for the SUBI film came when I marveled at how my dog Subi seemed to have this magical effect on people. Children, elderly people, people who were having a hard time, even people who had gone through major crises. Subi would interact with them and very quickly they would somehow feel better.
I got curious about what was happening — practically, scientifically and in people’s experience. Some deeper themes emerged that eventually became the idea for the movie. Big Life Questions about joy and pain and loss and healing and celebration — but through the playful lens of a shaggy golden retriever and the community that surrounds her.
Subi first came into my life shortly after a five-year period during which I lost eleven immediate and extended family members. She saw me through the time of COVID, living alone and often “distanced.” She has helped me more than I can say.
If you happen to be someone who has experienced significant challenges in life — especially around grief or trauma or any kind of of major disappointment, then I’m especially interested in your thoughts about what we post here as we put the film together. By exploring some deeper questions together and by laughing and playing a whole lot along the way, I’m hoping you’ll find a bit of joy and solace in the SUBI Movie.
So that’s the invitation: If you feel drawn to, please be a part of the adventure. We want to hear your ideas, your musings, see pictures of your dog or your partner or your garden or you being you.
In upcoming posts we’ll share a few fun music videos and explore some tasty themes, including why you really are miraculous, and belong here on planet earth even when things get rough.
Let’s explore.
Let’s laugh.
Let’s play.
